In July 2024, my family and I made the life-changing decision to immigrate to Portugal. We first planned to move in June of 2025 but after spending a week in November exploring the north of Portugal, we were captivated—the rich culture, warmth of the Portuguese people, magic of the Christmas season, peacefulness, and sense of community, made us realize we didn’t want to wait any longer.
After returning to Minnesota, we began selling nearly everything we owned. By early December, our house was on the market and soon went under contract. We had our VFS visa appointment early January 2025, and just days later we simplified our lives down to 8 pieces of luggage and arrived in Portugal - 2 adults, 1 teen, and 2 cats...ready to start our new journey! We closed on our home from abroad later that month.
Our daughter began with online international schooling before transitioning into our local public school. We also experienced firsthand the excitement and challenges of beginning again, in a new country. Education, healthcare, safety, cost of living, peacefulness & community were all major factors in our decision—and Portugal has delivered on every one of them. The incredible natural beauty that surrounds us is simply the cherry on top.
That lived experience—navigating every step of the process as a family—is what inspired me to help start AmeriGo Abroad. I know the mix of emotions that come with leaving family, friends, and the familiar behind - the logistics, the fears and the incredible reward of arriving on the other side; and I love helping others make their immigration to Portugal a reality.
